Yahoo Logos

The bright red ever-present Yahoo logo personifies the rather radical image of the global Internet services giant, Yahoo Inc. The immensely popular web portal, mail server, and search engine platform was founded by Stanford University graduate students Jerry Yang and David Filo in January of 1994, incorporated in 1995 as the domain, and whose original website was called “David and Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web”. The word Yahoo, or the more truncated “Y” logo, is a clever though cryptic acronym for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle”, and meant to illustrate not only the layered architecture of their database directories, but to portray their cyber-dominion as the source of all truth and wisdom in the reference to an oracle as well. Filo and Yang have perpetuated the story that they selected the corporate name and logo because of its deep-South slang derivation of a “yahoo” being rude, unsophisticated, and uncouth.
